Uchapeta is a refugee invasion into Cucuta, Colombia, just across the river from Venezuela. The indigenous community includes 287 children. We built a covered “comedor” or dining room with their help in July 2023. The government of Norte de Santander gave us their blessing to build both the comedor as well as provide dental and medical attention for the village. The Colombian army provided us protection.
The children suffered from Kwashiokor, a disease caused by malnutrition. After the construction, we paid the local men to put the concrete floor in, and then our team provided weekly delivery of high-protein food to the children.
