The vast Colombian Savannah encompasses 230,000 square kilometers. It holds several similarities to the African Savannah’s Grasslands, but with a lot more variances in flora and fauna. The Wayuu people are indigenous to the region, and many of the children die before adulthood due to hunger, because of a lack of water to provide abundant crops. The year we dug and built this well, 70 children died in the Savannah due to malnutrition.
This is the village of Kalouyachon, La Guajira. There were approximately 100 children, if memory serves. The problem is they had no fresh water. They would send their daughters to walk 2 hours daily, to bring back gallons of water to drink. We dug a well, about 85 feet, and found water in that dry Colombian savannah. Then we installed a pump and solar panels to run the pump.
This is the day we inaugurated the system.
